WHY IS THE BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON
A SPECIAL RACE FOR YOU?
My first marathon in the US!
WHAT MADE YOU SIGN UP TO RUN THE 26.2 MILE CHICAGO MARATHON?
The NPCO is what drew me to this specific race, and I have been looking forward to Chicago someday.
It is the closest "big race" to my hometown.
ARE YOU A RUNNER?
Running is my meditation and stress relief, my exercise and escape.
ARE YOU RUNNING FOR A CAUSE OR IN HONOR OF SOMEONE?
My wife, Holly, and I were a part of Clinic Abroad while still at Palmer in 2005, and we saw first-hand both the need
for chiropractic in developing countries and the profound effects our care had on the people there. We vowed to be a
part of causes like that in the future. I am running for those that have never heard of chiropractic (there are
billions of them)!
DO YOU HAVE ANY FUNNY OR INSPIRATIONAL TRAINING STORIES TO SHARE?
On any given day, especially race day, all preparations can evaporate into cramping, rainy, windy, nauseous,
painful misery. Despite this we have the opportunity to rise above that pain and deliver our best. My last
two marathons have been examples of what I just described. I want another, good or bad. But, let's hope for good!
FAVORITE QUOTE:
"Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure...
than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray
twilight that knows not victory nor defeat." ~ Theodore Roosevelt
DO YOU HAVE ANY WORDS OF ADVICE FOR FIRST-TIME MARATHON RUNNERS?
Keep smiling.
WHAT IS ON YOUR IPOD WHEN YOU ARE TRAINING?
Xavier Rudd, Jesse Cook, Jack Johnson, Widespread Panic, Incubus, Phish, Beatles, Anthony Robbins, chiropractic mentors,
Garrett Gunderson, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Tragically Hip, Niel Young... Or nothing, the shoreline on Lake Ontario makes
some pretty great soundtracks by itself.
DO YOU HAVE ANY CHIROPRACTIC EXPERIENCES OR STORIES?
As a family wellness doctor, and with a wife/partner who is a pediatric specialist, most days have some great experiences.
Seeing young kids stay off drugs and grow up with their full expression is fantastic. Helping adults change their
mindset and their lives through their own motive power is an amazing experience as well.
WHAT IS YOUR TRAINING LIKE IN CANADA?
Marathon training is the same here as in most places: one step at a time, one day at a time. Weather in the
Toronto area is similar to Chicago (no igloos or anything), just not quite as hot in the summer, and not quite
as cold in the winter (believe it or not). I have the privilege of living a short run from one of the best
lakeside parks on Lake Ontario, which provides beautiful training grounds for a fall marathon.
