This Month's Featured Runner Profile August 2010
Dr. Jay Basra - Team Captain WHY IS THE CHICAGO HALF MARATHON A SPECIAL RACE FOR YOU?
Having ran in high school and prior for personal enjoyment, I have always looked to the future as a possibility
of running a race/marathon. With the addition of a baby in the recent past, full time obligations with the
clinic and a massage therapy school, running took a back seat. It would be personal achievement to attain
the goal of finishing the Chicago Half Marathon and having other opportunities to run in the future. - Dr. Basra
Because it's my very first Half!, it's in my hometown, and I'm running it along with my brother-in-law, Dr. Jay Basra! - Nosheen
WHAT MADE YOU SIGN UP TO RUN 13.1 MILES?
My sister-in-law surprised me by signing me up for the Chicago Half
Marathon, as a birthday gift. I have not paid attention to myself
physically and this was her way of letting me know to put up or shut
up. As I mentioned earlier, its' been a personal goal to participate
and finish a marathon. - Dr. Jay Basra
I've always wanted to be a runner, and have always admired the endurance
and strength that goes along with the running lifestyle. People always
thought I was athletic growing up, but since I am fairly uncoordinated,
I have shied away from team sports for most of my life. Running seemed
a natural fit. When I started to run last September, I didn't think
I could do even 3 miles at a respectable pace. But a year has made
so much difference in my life - I have started to enjoy being active
in a way I never imagined. - Nosheen
ARE YOU RUNNING FOR A CAUSE OR IN HONOR OF SOMEONE?
I am running to support Non-Profit Chiropractic Organization to help
support persons in need. - Dr. Basra
Yes, I am running to honor myself first and foremost! I am realizing
how important it is to maintain my own health and strength as I get
older. And I am of course also running to support Non-Profit Chiropractic
Organization (NPCO) to help those less privileged who need medical
care in countries where it's too expensive to come by. - Nosheen
DO YOU HAVE ANY WORDS OF ADVICE FOR YOUR FELLOW RUNNERS?
Hang in there and keep chugging. It may be slow and steady but, you
will get to your destination. - Dr. Basra
I found running hard in the beginning allows me to keep a strong pace
rather than starting slow and building up speed. Also, my old college
roommate got me onto chewing gum while running so it absorbs the extra
saliva your mouth produces! Great little tip. - Nosheen
WHAT IS ON YOUR IPOD WHEN YOU ARE TRAINING?
Eclectic music from hip/hop, classical, rap, Indian beats and instrumentals.
- Dr. Basra
Either hip hop or pop songs slowed down, put to techno music. Towards
the end, I'm probably listening to "Stronger" by Kanye West on repeat
;)- Nosheen
DO YOU HAVE A CHIROPRACTIC EXPERIENCE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?
One of my patients, who was 180 lbs., in poor health had a goal of
running a marathon and she put her blood and sweat into the training.
She has reached the goal of not just attaining personal health but
has become an inspiration to those trying to start anything. - Dr.
Basra
My brother-in-law, Dr. Jay, is a gifted Chiropractor who puts his
patients at ease - even the skeptical ones (I wasn't always a believer).
Now, Dr. Jay truly addresses my entire well being and lifestyle during
my visits, and I feel like my running posture has definitely benefited
from him. - Nosheen
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE QUOTE?
One of my favorite quotes is: "We live our lives in chains not knowing
that we hold the key." - Dr. Basra
"Mind is everything: muscle - pieces of rubber. All that I am, I am
because of my mind." - Paavo Nurmi (Finnish runner) - Nosheen
DO YOU HAVE ANY INSPIRATIONAL STORIES TO SHARE?
I was having a particularly hard run after work one day, and my mind
started to dip into "feel sorry for yourself" mode. I was feeling
pretty bad for myself and ready to stop when I saw a man with prosthetic
legs get on the treadmill right in front of me. He had to spend an
extra 30 minutes stretching, and it took him a long time to get going,
but he was there doing it. If I was in his position, I would have
been huffing and puffing, probably with a chip on my shoulder about
how life was so much more difficult for me. But he didn't - he was
there to get strong and stay healthy. I think about him when I start
to get discouraged. That stranger at the gym inspires me to think
mind over matter. - Nosheen
LASTLY, WHAT IS YOUR TRAINING LIKE IN CHICAGO/SAN FRANSICO?
It was a challenge to find the time and the encouragement to begin
but as time progressed, I have found a groove and it just fits. The
runs have become enjoyable and satisfying. - Dr. Basra
Training for the Half in San Francisco has been challenging - mostly
because summer is San Francisco's coldest season and I have been running
indoors as a result. Still, the indoor running on treadmills is helping
to prep for Chicago's flat streets. When I am able to run outdoors,
the city's hilly terrain seems like it is pushing me and my muscles,
which will hopefully give me a boost in ability come race day. - Nosheen
ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD ADD?
The day you find something you love is the last day you work. - Dr.
Basra
I like running where I can see my reflection. Not sure why, but sweating
and seeing my muscles contract makes me feel strong. - Nosheen
